A reformer is only as good as what it is made from. This page details every material in MZ reformers — aluminium grades, spring wire specifications, wood species, upholstery composition — so you know exactly what you are buying before the box arrives.

Frame Materials

6061-T6 Aluminium (All Aluminium Models)

Property Specification
Alloy grade 6061-T6 (aerospace-grade aluminium-magnesium-silicon alloy)

Surface finish Electrostatic powder coat, 60–80 micron thickness. White (RAL 9016), Black (RAL 9005), or Beige (RAL 1015)
Corrosion resistance 6061-T6 is naturally corrosion-resistant (marine grade). Powder coat adds secondary barrier. Suitable for indoor use in all climates. Not rated for permanent outdoor exposure.
Weight capacity 150 kg dynamic load (user + spring resistance). Static load tested to 220 kg with no permanent deformation.
Why this alloy 6061-T6 is the standard for structural aluminium applications where strength-to-weight ratio matters — bicycle frames, aircraft components, yacht masts. It is stronger than 6063 (architectural aluminium used in cheaper reformers) and weldable without post-weld heat treatment loss at the joint.

Oak Wood (Wood-Frame Models)

Janka hardness White oak: 6,000 N (1,350 lbf). Red oak: 5,700 N (1,290 lbf)
Moisture content Kiln-dried to 8–10% before machining. Acclimatised to Australian conditions in warehouse before assembly.
Joinery Mortise and tenon at main frame corners. Steel-reinforced brackets at rail-to-leg junctions. Threaded inserts (M8 brass) for all bolt points — no wood screws under load.
Finish 3-coat polyurethane varnish: sealer coat + 2 top coats. Sheen: satin (30–35 gloss units). Natural (clear) and Black stain options available.
Care note Oak is a natural material. It moves with humidity. In coastal Australian climates (Sydney, Brisbane, Gold Coast), expect minor dimensional change seasonally. This is normal and does not affect structural integrity. Keep the reformer in a room with stable humidity (40–60% RH) where possible.

Spring System

Spring count 5 springs on all MZ Reformer aluminium reformers (3 light + 1 medium + 1 heavy standard configuration). Wood frame models: 4–5 depending on model.
Coating Clear zinc electroplating (prevents surface rust without the rubber smell of vinyl-coated springs). Plastic shrink-wrap sleeve over the outer coil as a secondary debris barrier.
End type Double-loop hook ends, closed coil. Quick-fit clip at the frame end for tool-free spring changes during workout.
Expected lifespan 3–5 years with regular use (3–5 sessions/week). Springs are a wear item — tension will gradually decrease. Replace when tension at 300 mm extension drops below 80% of original spec.
Why music wire ASTM A228 is the highest tensile strength carbon steel wire available. It is used in engine valve springs, surgical instruments, and high-cycle industrial applications. Cheaper reformers use oil-tempered wire (ASTM A229) which has lower fatigue resistance and ~20% lower tensile strength. Music wire costs more but lasts longer and maintains consistent tension through more cycles.

Carriage & Bearing System

Component Specification
Wheels 8 sealed cartridge bearings (608-2RS). Nylon outer wheel with rubber contact surface. ABEC-5 tolerance.
Carriage platform 18 mm plywood core (poplar/eucalyptus blend, FSC-certified) with high-density foam (45 kg/m³, closed-cell) and marine-grade vinyl top layer.
Vinyl upholstery PVC vinyl, 1.2 mm thickness, phthalate-free. UV-stabilised (does not yellow under indoor lighting). Tear strength: 45 N (ASTM D751). Abrasion resistance: 50,000+ cycles (Martindale).
Shoulder rests Same foam + vinyl construction as carriage. Height-adjustable with steel bracket. Removable for exercises that require flat carriage.

Hardware & Connectors

Component Specification
Bolts Stainless steel 304 (A2-70). M8 × 1.25 mm thread at structural joints. M6 at accessory mounts.
Nuts Nyloc (nylon-insert lock nuts) at all vibration-prone joints. Standard stainless at static points.
Threaded inserts (wood models) Brass, M8 internal thread. Press-fit + epoxy into pre-drilled oak. Rated to 18 N·m insertion torque.
Quick-fit spring clips Stainless steel snap hooks with spring-loaded gate. 8 mm gate opening. Rated to 80 kg each (breaking strength).

Rope & Strap System

Component Specification
Ropes 6 mm double-braid polyester with Dyneema core. Breaking strength: 450 kg. Working load: 150 kg. Pre-stretched during manufacture to minimise break-in elongation.
Handles Foam grip over nylon core. 130 mm grip length. Double-stitched nylon webbing loop (25 mm width) at attachment point.
Foot straps 50 mm nylon webbing with Velcro closure. Reinforced stitching at D-ring attachment. Fits foot sizes up to AU men's 14.

Country of Origin & Sourcing

MZ reformers are manufactured in China to our specifications. Here is the supply chain breakdown:

  • Aluminium extrusion and welding: Guangdong Province, China. Factory is ISO 9001:2015 certified and specialises in aluminium fitness equipment frames.
  • Oak wood frames: Wood sourced from North American FSC-certified suppliers, machined and finished in Zhejiang Province, China.
  • Springs: Manufactured in Jiangsu Province, China. ASTM A228 wire sourced from Japanese and Korean steel mills (Kobelco, Posco).
  • Upholstery: Vinyl and foam from Zhejiang suppliers serving the commercial gym equipment industry.
  • Hardware (bolts, nuts, bearings): Off-the-shelf standard components sourced from Chinese industrial supply chains (identical specifications to what you would find in an Australian hardware supplier).
  • Final assembly and QA: Factory in Zhejiang. Each unit is assembled, tested, then partially disassembled for flat-pack shipping.
  • Australian warehousing: Darra QLD 4076. Stock is held here for local dispatch. Final pre-shipment QA (the 12-point checklist) is performed at this warehouse before dispatch to Australian customers.
